Why I Left Nextdoor: A Verified Alternative in Polk County

Why I left Nextdoor and built this instead

I joined Nextdoor for the same reason everybody does. I wanted to know what was happening on my street. Whose dog got out. Which stretch of road was flooded. Who to call for a roof after a storm.

What I got instead was a feed full of arguments with people who did not live anywhere near me. Recycled political fights. Strangers posting cash requests with a sad story attached. Contractors with no license and no insurance collecting five-star reviews from accounts that had never posted anything else. And when something genuinely urgent happened, it was buried three screens down under a thread about a barking dog.

The core problem was never the neighbors. It was that nobody checked whether the people talking were neighbors at all. An address claim and a postcard code is not verification. It is a formality. Once you let anybody in, moderation becomes an endless game of cleanup, and the loudest accounts win by default.

So I built Block Friendly around the opposite bet: make it harder to get in, and everything after that gets easier. Every member verifies a phone number, passes an automated address and IP check against public records, and then gets reviewed by an actual human before their first post goes live. Businesses hand over a state license number and a certificate of insurance or they do not get listed. Asking for money is not a rule we enforce reluctantly — it is simply not permitted.

I also split the feed apart. Safety alerts do not compete with couch listings. Marketplace does not compete with casual conversation. If you only want outages and road closures, you can switch the chatter off and never see it again.

It is one county. Polk County, Florida. That is deliberate. A neighborhood network that covers everywhere ends up belonging to nobody. This one belongs to us.
